The Exchange Week 3- Exchanging a title for a Towel

Apr 19, 2026    Pastor Chris Johnson

This message centers on one of the most profound acts of humility in Scripture: Jesus washing His disciples' feet in John 13. We're invited to witness the Creator of the universe kneeling before His followers with a towel and basin, demonstrating what true greatness looks like in God's kingdom. Just hours before His crucifixion, while His disciples argued about who among them was greatest, Jesus showed them the full extent of His love through servant leadership. The central challenge we face is exchanging our self-focus for serving others, our pride for humility, and our titles for towels. Just as the cross became Christianity's enduring symbol, the towel could equally represent our faith because service defines the Christian life. We're reminded that Jesus served from His identity as the Son of God, secure in who He was and whose He was. This frees us to serve without needing recognition or status. The practical questions posed—'How can I add value to someone today?' 'How can I be Jesus to someone?' 'How can I outdo others in showing honor?'—transform service from abstract concept to daily practice. The message culminates in Romans 12:10's call to outdo one another in showing honor, challenging us to become 'noticers' who see needs others miss and meet them without fanfare. This isn't about volunteering occasionally; it's about fundamentally reorienting our lives around serving others in our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.
