The Exchange Week 4-Exchanging Bondage for Freedom

Apr 26, 2026    Pastor Chris Johnson

We have exchanged bondage for freedom through Christ. Drawing from Colossians 3, we're reminded that our new life in Christ isn't just a promise for heaven someday—it's a provision for how we live today. The sermon challenges a common misconception: that our struggles with sin are simply too big to overcome. First Corinthians 10:13 becomes our anchor, revealing that God acts as a holy governor in our lives, never allowing temptation beyond our ability to withstand it, and always providing a way of escape. The practical application is striking: every sin we commit as believers is ultimately our choice, not an unavoidable force. This isn't meant to condemn but to empower us. We're called to 'put off' the old self—anger, rage, malice, sexual immorality—and 'put on' the new self through compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. The key? Letting the word of Christ dwell in us richly, filling our minds with scripture, worship songs, and gratitude. Gratitude emerges as our greatest spiritual weapon, mentioned three times in this passage alone. We're challenged to stop tending the grave of our old way of living and embrace the resurrection life we've been given. The message is clear: we weren't made to be trapped in shame; we were called by name and made for more.
